Bunaken National Park of the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia

Bunaken National Park is a marine park that is north of the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, which is near the center of the Coral Triangle, where is the habitat of about four hundred species of corals, as well as  different fish, reptiles, mollusks and marine mammals, making it the perfect place to go do some eco-tourism and diving.

In this park visitors can see the most representative characteristics of tropical aquatic ecosystems of Indonesia, both in the plains on the earth as the coral reefs, through what is on the coast.  Bunaken Marine Park is among the most prominent and best
reserved in the country, with 97 percent under water and 3 per cent above the sea.

Most ecosystems can be seen diving in the marine park are several that are made of coral, such as marginal and the barrier.  Experts say there are 390 species of coral, and various types of marine algae such as Caulerpa calls, turkey tail and Halimeda, and mangrove species and different animals can be seen easily.

This park Bunaken is well populated with more than twenty villages within it and a good part of the premises are dedicated to being tour guides and diving teachers, plus several work areas.  This is why it is very easy to find people to carry visitors to major dive sites so you can see all the underwater wonders that exist there.

Visit to Kuta beach

After the beach season we had to do some sightseeing.  Ubud is the cultural destination of choice for people in Bali.  Usually people go to a resort a few days and then passed into Ubud to see a bit of Balinese culture.

A few years ago had to be authentic and should be a typical Balinese village with its traditions, but is now fully focused on tourism town full of hotels and shops.  Nonetheless, Ubud is a good place to get good rooms at affordable prices and rent bikes.

So besides giving us a ride the first day of Ubud and its environs, where you can see rice fields, the most we have done has been to make miles on the bike ( this time it was pink).

To the north are a few interesting temples, and along the road you can reach the Batur volcano and lake.  The view is pretty good and this volcano is not active which is an advantage. Read the rest of this entry »

Mount Bromo and Ijen Kawah

Yes, the title of this post could not be more graphic because that was all we did that day. But let’s start from the beginning, we wanted to go to Mount Bromo and Ijen Kawah, but outside the organized packages, visit the area is not easy. We wanted to go to Surabaya by train or plane to save about five hours of eleven it takes to make the trip from Yogyakarta to Cemoro Lawang, closest town to Mount Bromo by car. At the moment I explain the options that are to come to Surabaya and prices and then I will explain what was the one we chose and why.

OPTION 1: flight + car.
Lion Air has a flight from Surabaya to Yogyakarta departing at 6 am and takes an hour to get there. If purchased in advance, the flight will leave for 313,000 rupees (25.7 €). Then, once in Surabaya, life can get you a taxi driver or any agency to take you. We are looking in Yogyakarta and internet were unable to find anything other than a private driver which cost us $ 250 in three days, only the transport, which seemed a lot for Indonesia. Another option would be to rent a car yourself for $ 70 all three days, but considering the road conditions and poor signage, not recommend it. So rule out this option.

OPTION 2: Train + car.
As above, but train to Surabaya. Still had the same problem of having to go there and look for life. There are several trains connecting Surabaya and Yogyakarta with trains connecting Surabaya to Probolinggo, where you can get a taxi to arrive in another hour until Cemoro Lawang. The train fare air conditioning goes for 180,000 rupees from Yogyakarta to Surabaya and also have to add hotels and transfers.

OPTION 3: tour organized.
There are lots of agencies in Yogyakarta that organized the tour to go see the volcanoes of East Java that include transportation and hotels for quite cheaply. We finally we descant by hiring an agency, because the price difference was huge. They have many types of packets (the scanning can see in the brochure of the agency) and in the end we opted for the tour Pananjakan-Bromo-Ijen-Pengosekan two nights and two days, which we ended up doing a discount and we did for 585,000 rupees (48 €) per person (hotel and transportation included). Meals and were separate entries. The beauty of this tour is that we stopped at the port where the ferry to Bali, so we can continue our journey.

The bad thing about this tour is that you have to eat 11 hours in a van on the first day and it’s pretty killer. The good thing is it gives you the opportunity to meet other travelers. We hired him the day before 7.30 am and we came for the hotel. For nearly two hours we were on our own in the van because the rest of the group’s population rose only.

The downside, again, was that once there, the driver got lost and were circling over an hour. One of the things that surprised me was that when we were stuck in one traffic light and someone approached him asking the driver, always gave a coin. While recognizing that I did not see many people begging for our trip.

We finally found the group, who were seven in the Czech Republic, and continue the movement until Probolinggo at 19:30. They told us to get off the van and a travel miniagencia the tour and told us what to do next. As it was low season, we proposed ourselves in the same hotel together, which proved to be superior to the contract, and wanted us all together and this hotel was also the closest to Bromo.

What we did not expect is that to make the journey to Cemoro Lawang Probolinggo metieran us 16 people plus the driver in a microfurgoneta. She was so small that we had two seats to sit three. But the worst was to hit them in the hallway, they had to sit on a wooden stool with no security or anything. And if there had wanted to get someone to sweep, he would have to start at the ceiling because it was the only space that was not busy (yet), and all stuck there, all foreigners, we began to laugh at the situation now before us photos inability of most people could get there (and two hard boiled eggs).

Ten minutes after starting the trip, we stopped to buy groceries in a super town, because in Lawang Cemoro everything is pretty expensive, which was a breakdown of the organization. The problem was that dismantle the Tetris of the van and minutes later we had to reassemble.

Finally, at 9:15 p.m. we got to the hotel, almost 14 hours later, but I have to admit that I did anything heavy the way because I spent most of their time sleeping. Upon arrival at the hotel was so at night you could not see the landscape at all. We were given a room with shower and hot water (we had paid for a room with no shower). Cemara Indah Hotel is very basic, but it was actually better than I expected. The bathroom was recently renovated and had two double beds. Yes, the beds had only a bottom sheet and a blanket (no top sheet) and knowing that almost everyone takes a ride through the mountains that blanket to keep warm, I decided to put up my own travel and sleeping the next day we had to be up at 3 in the morning.
